Rose Bloom Competition

Avid gardeners carefully guard their rose blooms in May in anticipation of the annual Rose Bloom Competition at the Luther Burbank Rose Parade & Festival. The beautiful blooms are gingerly cut and carted to the competition area where they are labeled, displayed and judged by an accredited American Rose Society Judge.

Depending upon the weather, the Rose Bloom Competition will draw as many as 300 entries vying for the coveted "Best of Show" award. Ribbons and vases are presented to the top bloom in each class. With the help from the staff of the Luther Burbank Rose Parade & Festival, the Redwood Empire Rose Society organizes and coordinates the competition.

Competition Information
The competition will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2008 at the Luther Burbank Home & Gardens, Memorial Rose Garden. The categories of entry include:

  1. Old Garden Roses
  2. Hybrid Tea and Grandifloras
  3. Floribundas and Polyanthas
  4. Miniature Roses
  5. Shrub Roses and Large Flowered Climbers

The contestants should know the names of their roses, but a category for unknown roses will be provided. We recommended that entries have leaves left on the stems. Display containers and water will be provided. Contestants entering very large roses will need to furnish their own containers.

Rose blooms need to be delivered to the Luther Burbank Home & Garden between 8 AM and 10 AM Judging will begin at 10:30 AM. Streets will be closed due to the parade, but Sonoma Avenue west of Santa Rosa Avenue will have a designated parking area to drop off entries. For more information on the Rose Bloom competition contact Phyliss Sacanni at 707-542-7661 or the Luther Burbank Rose Parade & Festival.
